How to Grow Your Faith

1 Samuel 17:34–37

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for; it is the evidence of things not seen. Faith is a reliance on God. It is believing, acting out the belief that God can do His job. Faith is a deep trust in God.

How much faith do you have today? Could you have the faith that God can move a mountain?

Today, I want to talk about how to grow your faith. And the answer of growing your faith is found in this example of the story of David. We read of a young shepherd boy eager to fight a giant. This was no easy task, to stop Goliath. But what was the reason for David’s mighty confidence? What is the explanation behind his great faith in God? How did David grow his faith to where he was ready to take on a giant that struck fear into the entire Israelite army? The answer is found in verse 34.

Faith is strengthened by use. The more we exercise what little faith we have, the greater it becomes.

Consider David. He was not born with a mighty faith. It did not pop into his character one day while taking care of the sheep. Rather, the growth of his faith can be traced to when he used it earlier. In verse 34, David describes two situations God allowed him to protect these sheep. These two incidents strengthened his faith so much that a little later he was ready to defeat Goliath. David’s faith caused one of the greatest stories in the Bible.

Think about Daniel. His faith was tested by not eating the unclean animals. And through this act of faith, his faith was strengthened so much to where he would boldly defy the law and be thrown in a den of lions a few years later.

We should strive to exercise our faith whenever possible. Whether big or small, our faith is strengthened by using it. But how can we better use our faith, you may ask?

A. Faith promise commitment
B. Give ownership of your problems to the hands of God
C. Answered prayer
D. Attempt things that are bigger than yourself

In our efforts to grow our faith, we will experience trials that the devil puts to try and shake our faith. But remember that God will bless our faith. God’s blessings will directly come in accordance with our exercise of faith.

Whatever you do by faith will be tested. If you made a financial commitment, expect an unknown bill. If you try giving your worries to the Lord, expect the attacks from the devil. If you try doing a big ministry in faith, expect a fight from Satan. But if you continue forward, unwavering to the temporary trials Satan puts your way, then this shows that faith honors God, and God will honor your faith.

So think for a moment: Is there something in my life I can use to grow my faith? Maybe a financial burden. An emotional trial. An unanswered circumstance ahead. Instead of viewing it as a problem, view it as an opportunity to grow your faith.
