Entertainment Pt. 4 (What We Shouldn't Watch)

1. Immorality

About the easiest one to prove. We ought not watch things with vile, immoral topics or scenes.

Psalm 101:3 “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

Never be prey to the snare of watching the filth of immoral movies.

We would never argue that adultery or fornication is acceptable for a Christian to participate in. So why would we want to sit down, get comfortable, and watch someone imitate those very acts for our entertainment?

There is a difference between a movie acknowledging that sexual sin exists and a movie inviting the viewer to watch and enjoy it.

Immorality in movies would include sexual innuendos, love-making scenes, immodesty, and impurity.

2. Profanity

It is quite a tricky topic to discuss, but I still believe we should protect our ears from vile words.

Profanity is an ultimate denial of Jesus. Consider when Peter tried his hardest to show he wasn't a Christian and the one thing that worked was profanity.

Matthew 26:71 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

His profanity was a denial of Jesus. God takes profanity very seriously.

Years ago, when morality was much higher, profanity was bad. Only the dirtiest, most corrupt men would use profanity. Back then it was shameful and despised in society. In fact, the first time the f-word was used was in 1978. The movie was rejected and failed because of the atrocity of the word.

Now today, where morality has ceased, profanity is more culturally accepted. But does that make it ok? For one, hearing profanity increases your chance of cussing.

Have you ever watched a movie and found yourself quoting one of its lines later without even thinking about it? Our minds remember words and phrases that we repeatedly hear. Profanity is no exception. The more we expose ourselves to a certain language, the more familiar and readily available that language becomes.

We should avoid movies with profanity and guard our ears from them.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

3. Witchcraft/Sorcery

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We actually have the entire next article to focus on this.
