Are Baptists Protestants?
Are Baptist Protestants? In todays post (requested by a reader), we are examining a common question in whether or not Baptists have protestant roots.
From around 300 A.D. to the 1500s A.D., Roman Catholicism dominated much of the world. This religion began developing after 313 A.D., when Emperor Constantine wanted to mix the pagan religions of Rome with Christianity. This new mixed religion was soon after established, and Constantine assumed a leading role. Over time, this religion grew into what is now known as Roman Catholicism.
For over 1,200 years, the Roman Catholic Church became the dominant religious authority and often persecuted and even killed those who disagreed with its teachings. The Roman Catholics persecution, according to The Trail of Blood and The People Called Baptists was responsible for the murder of over 50 million Baptists. This period is often referred to as the Dark Ages. Consider what Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius said about the Baptists at that time.
"Were it not that the Baptists have been grievously tormented and cut off with the knife during the past twelve hundred years, they would swarm in greater number than all the Reformers.”
During this time, many Baptists were hunted, tortured, and killed for their beliefs. These groups of people though not Baptist in name, shared the same Baptist beliefs and doctrines. Here are some of the groups below :
While the name “Baptist” was not yet used, these groups held to Baptist doctrines and distinctives and were persecuted for holding to beliefs such as baptism by immersion, salvation by grace, and the authority of Scripture.
The Baptist distinctives such as salvation by grace alone, baptism by immersion, local autonomy of church and many other can be directly traced back to Jesus Christ.
Now with this understanding, lets think about the reformation.
It began when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses in 1517, which challenged the Roman Catholic Churches beliefs. This moment was the “spark” that set everything off. From there, it grew into a movement where people started protesting the authority of the Catholic Church. So from the Catholic church, many people began breaking off and forming different denominations. From the reformation, groups like, Lutherans, Calvinists, Episcopalians, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and Methodists were formed. These groups came out of the Catholic church and began protesting against it later creating their own religions. These people are the protestants.
So if the protestants came out of the reformation in the 1500s, then the Baptists cannot be protestant because we can trace the Baptist faith all the way back to Christ. Baptists had existed way before the Reformation. They were heavily persecuted and would have been widespread if not for the extreme persecution they faced. Though the Baptists have not always carried the title of Baptist, we can trace the distinctive doctrines of the Baptist faith all the way back to the time of Christ.
Baptists were already existing long before the Protestant Reformation, so they cannot be classified as Protestant because they did not originate from it. Baptists also did not come out of the Roman Catholic church because the Baptists were the object of the Catholics persecution for over 1,200 years!
So for those wondering whether Baptists are protestants, we can conclude that they are not. Hope you enjoyed reading this post and comment if you learned anything new!
If you would like to do some further research, I would highly recommend a podcast Sandy Creek Stirrings, and a book, The People Called Baptists.
