The Lords House
Psalm 84:1–4
1 How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord:
my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house,
and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young,
even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.
4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:
they will be still praising thee.
Back in the times of the Bible, the tabernacle, temple, and the house of the Lord were all kind of like church. And today I have 4 points from these verses. David is talking about the House of the Lord and in the same way, I believe we can pull out some practical truths from these verses.
1 How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!
That word "amiable" means beloved. David is saying here that the house of the Lord is a beloved place to him.
Is church beloved to you. Do you honestly love church. As Christians we need to get back to truly loving Gods house again. We love our earthly possessions and pursuits, but do you love church.
Great men of old have done so much to get us the freedom we have today of going to church and yet its almost a slap in the face to those heroes when we stop loving church. Maybe toay we should examine our hearts and ask ourselves, "Do I love Church."
2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord:
my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
Secondly, do you long for church?
What is clearly evident in this verse is David had a big desire for the house of the Lord.
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your excitement for church. On a Sunday Morning when you get up, how much do you desire to be in Gods house. Does anything in you just long to be in Church?
Sometimes its easy not to have that joy and longing for church when in the week, we only feed our flesh on the carnal pursuits of the World.
Be excited for everything.
For the people there. For the Pastor. For the building. For the freedom to come to church. For Gods presence. For the singing. For the preaching. For the altar call. For the time you can worship God.
Maybe its time to have a stirring in our heart to want church again.
3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.
In this verse, David is talking about the small sparrows that come to the House of the Lord. These birds would travel to the outer courts and pick up stray crumbs of bread. They would come and be strengthened. He then talks about how some of the sparrows will build there nest right outside the courts and there the sparrow will raise its young. And there the young will be taken care of further preserving each generation of sparrows. To this day in Israel, you will find sparrows flying above the courts and feasting off the crumbs.
My challenge tonight is to be like that sparrow.
When your spiritually weak and hungry, go to the House of God and be strengthened by the preaching. Feed yourself spiritually so you can make it as a Christian. And then just as the sparrow would make its nest there, raise your kids in church. Let them see how they too can feast off the riches of God's word. And if you do this you can make it for God just like that sparrow will thrive when in the House of God.
4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:they will be still praising thee.
Lastly, there are blessings to be found in the House of the Lord. There are messages help you grow as a Christian. There are fellow believers there to encourage you. There is singing that will make you thankful for God. There is the feeling inside you that you met with God. Christian, there is a blessing for you in Gods house!
