Loving God
1 Corinthians 13:13
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
The Bible says that out of Faith, Hope and Charity, the greatest is Charity.
Today, I want to talk about loving God.
In the Bible, there are many different kinds of love. The most common 2 are Agape and Phileo.
Agapē
Definition: Unconditional, self-sacrificing love. It’s not based on feelings or circumstances, but on a choice to love regardless of what one receives in return.
Definition: Conditional love based on feelings or circumstances. Usually dependent on what one does for another.
Think about a friendship where someone sticks close only when times are good. As long as you’re fun to be around, they love you. But when hardship comes, they vanish. That’s phileō love — love based on circumstances. But Christ’s love is agapē — He didn’t leave us when we were sinners; He chose the cross anyway.
Matthew 22:37–38
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
Again, how do we know that we have an agape love for God?
Agape Love starts with a choice.
Agape Love is shown by what were willing to sacrifice.
Agape Love is shown in what were willing to give.
1 John 3:16
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
God showed his ultimate Agape Love for us by sacrificing his life for us.
That's how we know he loves us.
So today, what are you willing to sacrifice for God?
Do we obey him?
John 14:15
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Are we willing to give him our time?
Our priorities, our abilities, our standards, our desires, our life?
Do you, love God?
