Sports in the Christian Life.
With Football, I play it outside. I play Madden inside and I watch all the Eagles games.
Probably my number 1 hobby is football. But if I'm not careful, I will let sports consume me.
Now there's nothing wrong with sports but there are some things to watch out for and to balance with sports in the Christian life.
1. Sports can become an idol.
Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Idols do not have to be little carved statues. They are whatever has the most priority in our life. And sports along with every hobby or activity can become an idol. That could be a danger with sports. God is worthy of all our life and we ought to be careful not to be idolatrous with the things of this world.
2. Sports can Steal God's time.
Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together...”
As a Christian we have no right to skip church for a sporting event.
It doesn't matter whether their half-priced tickets or its what your friends are doing. We should not forsake the Church for a sporting event!
If we do, it shows we struggle with point 1 in being idolatrous.
3. Sports can distract from our real race.
2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
Lastly, sports like anything else could distract us from our purpose.
Our purpose is not to be the best athlete in school. Our purpose is not to be a basketball guru.
Our purpose is to glorify God with our lives.
Sports can be a hindrance especially in teen guys.
It could be a stumbling block and we must be careful and like Paul, fight the good fight!
But what is the key to balancing sports in the Christian life??
Philippians 4:5
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”
MODERATION IS THE KEY!
Sports like politics, social media, and hobbies are perfectly fine to have but it must be controlled and be put in moderation.
Sports are a great thing—but only when kept in moderation. When we let competition, practice, or entertainment take over our time, energy, and focus, we step out of God's design for a disciplined Christian life.
