The Calamity of Complaining.
And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”
Can you imagine. After all God has done for them, they wanted to go back to Egypt. Complaining causes a quitting spirit. It makes you ungrateful in a terrible way.
You may scoff, I would never want to quit like they did!
Yet you will let spilling a drink or stubbing your toe ruin the entire rest of your day!
Complaining belittles God and makes you focus on the terrible. What you don't have and what is wrong. We complain over the weather being too hot or the computer not loading up fast enough for us. Because someone took MY seat in church or we have a scratchy throat.
Let us consider during this time all God has done for us. All the great blessings he has given us as a child of God.
2. Complaining is Carnal.
Our opening verse shows how God is greatly displeased with complaining.
Complaining is the ultimate sign of being ungrateful.
Around a week ago, I was writing when all of the sudden, I looked down and my hand was covered with ink. I mean COVERED!! And immediately, I began to get upset and start having a bad attitude.
When in reality, I was displeasing God.
God takes complaining serious and we should too.
A Solution:
Colossians 3:2
Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.
So next time when you feel low and you begin to develop a bad attitude, start thinking about all the blessings, and heaven, and Jesus.
Complaining only succeeds when we set our affections on ourselves instead of God.
Ouch! This one hit close to home. So many good quotes!! Especially the part about complaining shaping our identity. I don't want that to be me. I never thought about complaining as belittling God. But, you are so right!
