7 Tips to Help You Stay Awake During Devotions
I kept your wording, structure, and format the same while fixing the grammatical and punctuation errors.
Have you ever gotten up in the morning, grabbed your Bible, and found yourself slowly falling asleep? Your eyes get heavy, and it is hard to even concentrate.
Lately, I have been hearing about teens that struggle with staying awake in the early morning to do their devotions. Especially with summer, it can be even harder. Devotions are VITAL to the Christian, and it can be so easy for the flesh to fall asleep or be really groggy in the morning. So today, I have 7 tips to help you stay awake and energized in the morning.
Set your alarm!
Having an alarm set allows your body to habitually wake up at a certain time. Setting an alarm and following it creates a regular system that is helpful to get you up in the morning. This creates order in our sleep system.
Have your clothes laid out!
Before you go to bed at night, lay out your clothes, Bible, etc. This creates organization so that when you get up, you do not have to worry about finding all your stuff. This creates a pleasant order to the eyes when you wake up and see everything there. At night, I lay out my clothes, Bible, prayer notebook, spiritual book, and a hot tea packet.
Stay away from the following!
a. Reclined positions
Obviously, do not have devotions in bed or in a reclined sleeping position.
b. Blankets
This is not a time to get comfortable and cozy. Toss the blanket and focus on your devotions. We use a blanket to go to sleep, not to spend time with God.
c. Comfortable cushioned seats
I personally think it is better to sit on a chair or something hard that makes you sit up straight. A desk is great to have too because it allows you to write and lets you place your Bible out flat.
Jumping jacks
These are invaluable and allow the blood to flow and make you active. Even stretching is good to do.
Pray
There is nothing wrong with praying before you begin and asking the Lord to help you stay alert and focused on what He has for you in His Word.
Have a plan
Get some plan that you are following in your devotions. It is so easy to doze off when you sit down and flip through the Bible aimlessly, having no plan. Get a plan and be looking forward to doing it.
You have to want it
At the end of the day, you could do all these things, but if you do not want it, you will still feel sleepy. Get a desire and a can-do spirit, realizing that you get to spend one-on-one time with the Creator of the universe. Be excited and place a desire within your heart.
Psalm 63:1 — "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is."
